Types of Attic Insulation

Insulation is a type of material that is placed within attics, roofs, ceilings, walls, crawl spaces, and floors. Insulation acts as a barrier against hot and cold air, resists heat, and can naturally regulate the temperature of your home, keeping the hot air OUT in the summer and warm air IN during the winter, and vice versa. Properly insulated attics can keep your home comfortable, which will lessen your reliance on heating and AC, lowering those bills over time. Different types of attic insulation fit different needs and goals. The type of insulation you need can vary based on the home itself, the climate you are living in, and the location of the insulation. The four main types we work with at SES include: 

Blanket insulation (batted or rolls): large rolls of fiberglass or cellulose, usually pink or yellow. These are probably what comes to mind when you think of insulation. Batts and rolls are great for covering large, flat areas of the attic. 

Foam board or rigid foam: Flat, rigid foam boards with a higher r-value than blanket insulation. These are ideal for insulating walls. 

Spray foam: a spray-on type of insulation that hardens fast and forms an airtight, insulating barrier. These are perfect for sealing gaps and for smaller areas that blanketed insulation can’t fit into. 

Loose fill/blown-in (cellulose): insulation made out of shredded cellulose material that is blown into the attic in piles. Loose-fill insulation is perfect for revitalizing older insulation and for getting inside areas that blanket insulation can’t reach.

Attic insulation will settle naturally over time, which unfortunately leads to decreased effectiveness and a lack of temperature regulation in the home. Pests like mice and rats and wildlife like raccoons and squirrels will damage your insulation when they nest inside your attic. Raccoons will rip the insulation up to make their nests, mice will dig tunnels through it, and all of them will soil it with their urine and droppings.
