Types of Attic Insulation

Insulation is material that is placed in attics, ceilings, crawl spaces, walls, floors, and roofs. Insulation is heat-resistant, acting as your home’s barrier against extreme temperatures. During the summer, insulation resists hot air trying to get inside the home, and during the winter, insulation resists hot air trying to escape the home. Properly insulated attics result in a much more comfortable home that relies less on heating and AC. Over time, you will notice these energy bills decrease, as it requires less AC to keep your home at a nice temperature. The type of insulation you need can vary based on your needs and goals, the home itself, the climate you are living in, and the location of the insulation. The four main types we work with at SES include: 

Blanket insulation (batted or rolls): large fiberglass or cellulose blankets/rolls, usually pink and yellow in color. Perfect for large, flat areas of the attic, this material is most likely what you picture when you think of insulation.  

Foam board or rigid foam: Flat, rigid, highly effective foam boards that are ideal for insulating walls. 

Spray foam: a spray-on type of foam insulation that hardens fast, forming an airtight, insulating barrier. Spray foam is perfect for sealing gaps, and for insulating smaller or awkward areas that blanketed insulation can’t fit into. 

Loose fill/blown-in (cellulose): insulation made out of shredded cellulose material that is blown into the attic in piles. Loose-fill insulation is perfect for revitalizing older insulation and for getting inside areas that blanket insulation can’t reach.

Pests like mice will dig tunnels throughout your insulation, hollowing it out and destroying its ability to resist heat.
