Types of Attic Insulation

Insulation is a type of material placed inside attics, roofs, ceilings, walls, crawl spaces, and floors that acts as a barrier against hot and cold air. Insulation will resist heat and can naturally regulate the temperature of your home, keeping the cold air IN during the summer and cold air OUT in the winter, and vice versa. Properly insulated attics can keep your home comfortable and lessen your reliance on heating and AC, lowering those bills over time. There are many different types of attic insulation, that all fit different needs and goals, and fulfill different purposes. Types of insulation needed can even vary based on the home itself and the location of the insulation. The four main types we work with at SES include: 

Blanket insulation (batted or rolls): large rolls of fiberglass or cellulose, usually pink or yellow. These are probably what comes to mind when you think of insulation. Batts and rolls are great for covering large, flat areas of the attic. 

Foam board or rigid foam: Flat, rigid foam boards with a higher r-value than blanket insulation. These are ideal for insulating walls. 

Spray foam: a spray-on type of insulation that hardens fast and forms an airtight, insulating barrier. These are perfect for sealing gaps and for smaller areas that blanketed insulation can’t fit into. 

Loose fill/blown-in (cellulose): insulation made out of shredded cellulose material that is blown into the attic in piles. Loose-fill insulation is perfect for revitalizing older insulation and for getting inside areas that blanket insulation can’t reach.
